B-2 Visa – U.S. Tourist Visa for Temporary Travel and Leisure

The B-2 visa is a nonimmigrant visa designed for individuals seeking to enter the United States temporarily for tourism, leisure, or medical purposes. This visa is ideal for travelers who do not intend to work or study long-term in the U.S. but wish to visit for personal or recreational reasons.

To qualify for a B-2 visa, applicants must demonstrate that their stay is temporary, that they maintain a permanent residence abroad, and that they have sufficient financial resources to cover the cost of the trip and their stay in the U.S.

Permitted activities under the B-2 visa include:

Tourism or vacation travel

Visiting friends or relatives

Receiving medical treatment

Participating in social events held by fraternal, cultural, or charitable organizations

Engaging in amateur musical, sporting, or artistic events (without receiving payment)

Enrolling in short recreational courses, such as a weekend art or cooking class, not intended for academic credit

The duration of stay is determined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the port of entry and is typically granted for up to six months, though extensions may be possible under certain conditions.

Family members of B-1 business visa holders or others visiting the U.S. must apply individually for their own B-2 visa, as there is no derivative B-2 status.

The B-2 visa is a convenient and widely used option for those wishing to explore the United States, reconnect with loved ones, or access medical care while maintaining strong ties to their home country.
