B-1 Visa – U.S. Business Visitor Visa for Temporary Professional Activities
The B-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa designed for business professionals traveling to the United States temporarily to engage in legitimate commercial or professional activities. This visa is not intended for employment but allows individuals to participate in a wide range of business-related functions.
To be eligible for a B-1 visa, applicants must show that they are coming to the U.S. for a temporary purpose, are able to financially support themselves during their stay, and have a permanent residence abroad they do not intend to abandon.
Business activities under the B-1 visa may include, but are not limited to:
Consulting with business partners or associates
Attending scientific, educational, professional, or business conventions or conferences
Negotiating contracts or settling estates
Participating in short-term professional training programs
Transiting through the U.S. under certain circumstances
Deadheading, where airline crew members enter the U.S. as non-working crew for positioning purposes
The length of stay is determined at the U.S. port of entry by a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, typically granting a period sufficient to complete the intended business activity—often up to six months, with the possibility of requesting an extension.
Family members of B-1 visa holders are not eligible for derivative status and must apply individually for a B-2 visa (Tourist Visa) if they wish to accompany or visit.
The B-1 visa offers a flexible solution for professionals needing to conduct short-term business in the United States without engaging in employment or long-term residence.
