P-1 Visa – U.S. Work Visa for Internationally Recognized Athletes and Entertainment Groups

The P-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa designed for internationally recognized athletes and members of renowned entertainment groups coming to the United States to perform in specific events, competitions, or tours. This visa category is divided into P-1A for athletes and P-1B for entertainment groups.

The P-1A visa applies to professional athletes or athletic teams who have achieved a high level of international recognition. Eligible individuals may enter the U.S. to participate in athletic competitions as individuals, team members, or coaches affiliated with professional leagues or foreign associations. The P-1A classification also covers amateur or professional athletes performing in theatrical ice skating productions, whether individually or as part of a group.

The P-1B visa is for members of internationally acclaimed entertainment groups. To qualify, the group must have been established for at least one year and must be recognized as outstanding in its discipline across multiple countries. At least 75% of the group’s members must have been consistently associated with the group for at least one year. The group’s reputation must be based on collective excellence, not solely on the accomplishments of individual members or past performances.

The initial duration of stay under both P-1A and P-1B classifications is determined by the time needed to complete the scheduled event, competition, or tour—up to a maximum of one year. Extensions may be granted in increments if additional time is required for continued participation in the same event or activity.

Spouses and unmarried children under 21 may accompany the P-1 visa holder by applying for P-4 dependent status. While they may attend school or college in the United States, P-4 dependents are not permitted to work.

The P-1 visa offers a flexible and structured immigration option for world-class athletes and performers looking to showcase their talents on an international stage within the United States.
