F-1 Visa – U.S. Student Visa
The F-1 visa, also known as the Academic Student Visa, is a nonimmigrant visa that allows foreign nationals to study full-time at accredited academic institutions in the United States. Eligible schools include colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, academic high schools, elementary schools, and other recognized academic programs. To qualify, the applicant must be enrolled in a program that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate, and the institution must be approved by the U.S. government to host international students under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
To be eligible for an F-1 visa, students must meet the following key requirements:
Be enrolled in an academic, language-training, or vocational program at a qualifying institution.
Maintain full-time student status throughout their course of study.
Demonstrate English language proficiency or be enrolled in English language courses.
Sponsoring a relative through a family-based green card is a powerful way to reunite loved ones and offer them the Show proof of sufficient financial resources to cover tuition and living expenses.
Maintain a foreign residence abroad with no intent to abandon it.
The length of stay under the F-1 visa is tied to the duration of the academic program, as outlined on Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status). Students are generally allowed to remain in the U.S. up to 60 days after completing their program to prepare for departure or apply for an extension, such as Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 may accompany F-1 visa holders under F-2 dependent status. While F-2 dependents can study part-time or full-time (with some limitations), they are not permitted to work while in the United States.
The F-1 visa is the most common path for international students seeking quality education in the U.S., offering access to top academic institutions and a pathway to valuable post-graduation opportunities.
